Battery Ecosystem

Battery ecosystem

A revolution is occurring in the transportation sector as passenger vehicles, buses, trucks and other heavy-duty machinery are being electrified with lithium-ion batteries. During the past few years strong battery ecosystems have formed in Europe and in Finland with investments and R&D taking place in all parts of the value chain, all aimed at sustainable battery production and recycling of battery materials for the European market.

This development work includes but is not limited to:

  • Bespoke Sample preparation
  • CRM Mineral / element calibrations
  • Quantitative data / indicative spectral fingerprint
  • Modelling spectral interferences in these unusual matrix types
  • Developing data QC procedures

Production of batteries is based on a long value chain starting from exploration and mining of battery minerals, production of battery chemicals, precursors, active materials, battery cells and assembling battery packs with recycling of end-of-life batteries to close the material loop. It is expected that the demand for battery raw materials will increase rapidly during this decade with production and recycling of key battery materials lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, graphite, and phosphorus as well as other critical elements attracting established companies as well as new players to join the emerging industry. Accurate knowledge and management of impurity elements during the various processing steps of battery minerals and materials is crucial as battery performance is directly related to the strict purity requirements of the battery materials.

We have many years of analytical experience, and these skills have been retasked for the analysis of CRMs, battery minerals and black mass.  X-ray Mineral Services Finland has developed a new proprietary workflow called META, which aims to provide a complete characterization suite for the battery value chain based on combination of robust and cost-effective analytical methods and tailored characterization. This workflow is appropriate for the flexible characterization of both battery raw materials and refined materials as well as the full characterization of different types of side streams and secondary materials associated with production and recycling of battery materials. The META workflow by X-ray Mineral Services Finland can provide useful, on-time and cost-efficient analytical information (including high grade lab and bespoke onsite data) in various stages of the battery value chain from exploration of battery minerals and processing of battery materials up to the recycling of end-of-life batteries.
