Alan R. Butcher, Chief Scientist at Hafren Scientific, has co-authored an innovative study exploring newly discovered cobalt-gold mineralisation in northern Finland. This research, led by Senior Author Sayab Mohammad, utilised a range of advanced analytical techniques to investigate the complex structural history of the area, providing insights into the formation of these valuable minerals.

The study integrated large-scale regional geophysics with cutting-edge micro-analysis technology, including scanning micro-XRF, conducted by Alan and his colleagues at Bruker, including Andrew Menzies. Their work enabled detailed analysis of the mineralogy and textures. Additionally, micro-CT scanning, performed at GTK under the direction of Jukka Kuva, provided enhanced 3D visualisations of the mineral structures.
This collaborative research was supported by Mawson Gold (Nick Cook) and benefitted from geometallurgical contributions by GTK’s Quentin Dehaine, as well as structural expertise from Oxford University’s Richard Palin. The findings from this ongoing exploration in Finnish Lapland are expected to provide valuable insights for those studying the interplay between deformation and ore formation in the region.
